Entry/Exit System (EES)

The Entry/Exit System, also known by the acronym (EES), is an automated IT system for registering non-EU nationals travelling for a short stay (, each time they cross the external borders of the Schengen area.

EES has been developed to prevent irregular migration and enhance security in the Schengen area. The system will gradually replace the manual stamping of passports at the external borders of the EU in order to make border crossing more efficient.

The EES collects, records and stores personal data from travel documents – including full name, date of birth, place of birth, the dates of entry and exit and biometric data such as facial images and fingerprints.

The EES will starts operations on 12 October 2025. European countries using the EES will introduce the system gradually at their external borders. This means that data collection will be gradually introduced at border crossing points with full implementation by 10 April 2026.

Your rights

If you are registered in EES, you have certain rights. You generally have the right to know whether data about you has been entered in the EES, as well as the right to access personal data about you. You also have the right to have factually incorrect data corrected and you can request erasure of unlawfully registered data.

You must contact the authority that has dealt with the case underlying your registration in EES.

As for registration in EES at the border, it will usually be the Danish National Police, who is responsible for the processing of data and who is responsible for handling your complaint. You can find the contact details of the Danish National Police here: Contact the police | | Danish police.

If the basis for your stay in the EU/EEA changes, it will usually be the Danish Immigration Service, who is responsible for the processing of data and who is responsible for handling your complaint. You can find the contact details of the immigration authorities here: New to Denmark.

Supervision

The Danish Data Protection Agency is the national supervisory authority in relation to processing of personal data in the Danish part of the Entry/Exit System. This supervisory role mainly entails carrying out inspections and handling complaints from persons registered in EES.
